Running the 24 hour tape test properly
This is the step most people skip, and skipping it is why so much fly work goes sideways. It costs one night and a strip of tape. Dry the area around the drain so the tape sticks. Stretch clear tape across the opening with the sticky side facing down into the drain, and leave a small gap at one edge so air can move. Then walk away for 24 hours. Do not run water in that fixture during the test. In the morning, look at the underside of the tape. flies that emerged from the pipe will be stuck there. If you find several, that drain is producing. If you find none, that drain is not your source and you can stop working on it. Test one fixture at a time, including the shower, the laundry standpipe, and any floor drain. The flies are still there at the same rate. That is informative rather than discouraging. It usually means one of three things. The first is reach. A hand brush covers the first stretch of pipe and no further, so a film beyond that keeps producing. The second is a second fixture on the same line, which is why testing every drain matters rather than testing the obvious one. The third is a failure outside the plumbing you can see: a break in a line, a septic issue, or saturated ground feeding organic matter under the structure. Each of those needs equipment. A camera in the line answers the third question quickly, and a longer mechanical tool answers the first. What none of them need is another round of the same treatment. When the count has not moved in three weeks, change the approach rather than the dosage.
Comparing two fly control proposals
Price on its own tells you very little, so compare on four specifics instead. First, confirmation. Did the company confirm which fixture is producing, by tape test or otherwise, or did they propose treating every drain on the property. The difference is often several hundred dollars of unnecessary work. Second, mechanical work. A plan built only on pouring products has skipped the step that removes the habitat. Ask directly whether pipes will be brushed and by what method, and how many times over the schedule. Third, the timeline. Given a 21 to 27 day cycle, a plan with one visit and no follow up cannot cover a full generation. Ask how many visits are included, at what spacing, and what triggers a return at no extra cost. Fourth, escalation. Ask what happens if the drains come back clean and the flies continue. A good answer describes camera work or a moisture survey and says what it costs. A vague answer means you will be paying monthly while nobody looks any further.
