Dry air is an advantage, if you use it
In a humid state, a fly inspection means checking dozens of places that could plausibly be wet. In Montana it means checking the few that actually are, which is a much shorter list. At roughly 14 inches of precipitation a year and 59 percent humidity, most organic material on a Montana property dries and crusts within a couple of days. A crusted surface is not fly habitat. That is why a pile of clippings raked out thin in Billings stops being a problem almost immediately, while the same clippings heaped up and sitting on wet ground keep going. So the productive move is to walk the property two days after a rain or an irrigation cycle and note everything still damp. Realistically that is a leaking hydrant, the mud ring around a stock tank, a manure pad, the shaded low spot under a downspout, and maybe a compost pile you have been watering on purpose. Each of those is a specific fix: repair the leak, gravel the apron, haul the manure, extend the downspout, turn and cover the compost. The same logic applies indoors, only inverted. The building is the wet place, so once it is cold outside, the search moves to plumbing without much ambiguity.
A short season and how to use it
Montana's fly calendar has fewer moving parts than most states, which makes planning straightforward. October through May, outdoor breeding is off. A 13F median winter low stops development entirely, and the ground is frozen for much of it. Anything flying indoors in these months hatched indoors, so the search is drains, leaks, and voids. May and early June are for setup. Runoff and spring irrigation create the year's first damp spots, so this is when to fix the hydrant, gravel the tank apron, move the winter manure pile, and get screens and door sweeps in shape before pressure builds. Stable flies move faster, around 12 days, and they concentrate near animals. A two-week hauling cycle stays ahead of both. By early September, cooling nights slow everything, and by October the outdoor problem has closed for the year. That compressed schedule is why a twelve-month exterior contract makes little sense on a Montana house, and why the three or four months that matter deserve real attention instead.

On working land in Montana, fly control is livestock management with a different name. The animals bring the water, the feed, and the manure, which together create the only consistently wet organic material for miles. The hot spots are predictable. Then the feeding area, where hay gets worked into mud and spoiled bales sit through the season. Then the manure pile itself, especially the edges that stay damp underneath. House flies come off the same material and simply annoy. The practical program is drainage first, hauling second, product third. Gravel or regrade the tank apron so it drains. Haul or thin spread manure and bedding every two weeks in summer so nothing completes a cycle. Remove spoiled hay instead of shoving it aside. Where a pile cannot be moved, an insect growth regulator on a set schedule keeps larvae from maturing. A provider who leads with fogging instead of hauling has the priorities reversed.
Winter flies mean the building is leaking somewhere

Outside it is 13F and nothing is developing, so the insect in front of you came from inside the structure, and there are only three realistic explanations. The first is drain film. Moth flies are fuzzy, sit flat on walls, and hardly fly. Their larvae graze on the gel lining a floor drain, a laundry standpipe, or a utility sink. A stiff brush and a bacterial product on a weekly cycle ends it, and taping each drain overnight tells you which one is producing. The second is a leak. Phorid flies are tiny, humpbacked, and run erratically before flying. They need wet decaying material, which in winter usually means a dripping supply line soaking framing, a failed seal at a toilet, or a broken drain line wetting soil under a slab. If the drains tape clean and phorids keep appearing, ask for a camera on the line before anyone treats. The third is a carcass. Deer mice, squirrels, and birds crowd into Montana walls, attics, and vents against the cold, and one that dies there produces blow flies within days. Remove it, seal the entry, and clear the stragglers with a short-lived spray.
Judging two Montana fly quotes
Line the two proposals up and look for a named wet spot. In a state this dry, a provider who has inspected properly can tell you exactly where the water is: the hydrant at the north corral, the apron around the tank, a floor drain in the shop, a broken line under the kitchen. A quote that skips straight to a monthly rate has not done the walk. Next, look at the season. The months worth paying for run June through early September, plus indoor drain work whenever it is needed. Third, check whether repairs are in scope or only products. Regrading a muddy apron, fixing a hydrant, and extending a downspout are permanent fixes; fogging is not. On a ranch, the hauling schedule should be written into the plan with dates, not described as a recommendation. Fourth, ask about travel and response time, which matter more in Montana than in dense states and should be stated plainly. Finally, favor the provider willing to tell you the source is something you have to fix, such as the corral drainage, rather than one promising to manage it indefinitely with a sprayer.
