First, you have time. A source discovered this weekend is not going to double before you deal with it, so a methodical search beats a panicked spray. Second, patience cuts both ways. Because generations are longer, the lag between your cleanup and a visible drop in flies is also longer. Two to three weeks is a normal wait here, and giving up at day five is the most common mistake. Count flies, write the number down, and let the calendar tell you whether the work paid off.
The bin, the pile, and the pile behind the garage
In a rainy city the highest yield search is short, because the wettest organic material is almost always in the same three places. Start with the yard waste and food scrap container. Lift the contents and look at the bottom, then look at the ground it sits on, which often holds more residue than the bin. Anything compacted and wet down there is a nursery. Move to the compost. A pile that gets turned and stays hot is a poor breeding site because the heat and airflow work against larvae. A pile left alone becomes cold and saturated at the base, and that wet edge where it meets the soil is exactly where you will find them. Then check the forgotten pile. Grass clippings dumped behind a garage, leaves raked into a corner, or a tarp covering yard debris will stay wet through most of the year given 38 inches of annual rainfall. Spread it, dry it, or haul it. In Seattle that single afternoon of work resolves more fly complaints than any product on a shelf.
Cafes, kitchens, and the drain nobody has opened
Anywhere food is served, the floor drain is the first suspect and usually the right one. Organic film builds on the inside wall of the pipe, often above the water line, and drain fly larvae live in that layer. Coffee grounds, milk residue, and food waste feed it steadily. A drain that gets rinsed or bleached weekly can still be producing flies every day, because liquid poured in runs down the middle and never contacts the wall. The method that works is mechanical. A long brush scrubs the wall, repeated over several weeks, followed by a foaming bacterial product that expands and clings where the brush reached. Add the mop sink, the mop head itself, the space under equipment legs, and the underside of dish machine skirting to the list. Use light trap counts as a measurement rather than a solution. If the weekly catch stays flat while cleaning continues, the source is still producing somewhere. Keep the findings and the treatment dates in writing, since that record is worth having when an inspector asks what you did.
Crawl spaces, moisture, and what dies under a house
When flies appear indoors and no drain or bin explains it, the space under the floor deserves a look. Crawl spaces in a wet climate collect exactly what flies need. A plumbing drip, a failed vapor barrier, or a downspout discharging next to the foundation keeps the soil damp all year, and decaying debris on that soil becomes larval habitat that nobody ever sees. Crawl spaces are also where animals get in and die. That is the usual explanation for a sudden group of metallic blue or green flies inside a house that is otherwise clean, and it is why the search matters more than any treatment. What to check: the vapor barrier is intact and covers the soil, vents are screened and clear, no pipe is dripping, and no standing water sits after a wet week. Downspouts should discharge well away from the foundation rather than beside it. Go look twice a year rather than never. Most crawl space fly sources are found by someone with a flashlight, not by a chemical.
A month by month plan for a wet climate
February and March are maintenance months. Nothing outdoors is producing much, so this is the cheapest time to brush every drain, rinse the bins, check the crawl space, and repair screens. April and May bring the first steady outdoor activity as material warms. Stable flies begin appearing in mid to late spring, so compost and animal areas should be sorted out now rather than in June. June through September is peak season, modest as it is by hot city standards. House flies dominate, and weekly attention to bins and pet waste holds the population down. October and November stay damp and mild, which keeps sources alive longer than most people expect. This is a good window for a careful inspection because material is still active and traceable. December and January belong to indoor flies. With outdoor lows near 37F, anything flying in a heated room came from a drain, a plant pot, a crawl space, or something dead in the building, and it should be investigated on that basis.
Three questions that separate a plan from a spray
You do not need any technical knowledge to judge a fly proposal. Three questions do most of the work. First: what did you find, and where. A provider who answers with a specific location, the base of the compost pile, the laundry room floor drain, the residue under the yard waste bin, has actually inspected. One who answers with a species name and a product has not, and you should keep looking. Second: how many visits are included, and over what period. Fly work always needs at least one return, because a generation already developing has to finish emerging. If the answer is a single visit, ask what happens in week three. Third: who removes the material, and how often. Source removal decides the outcome, so it belongs in writing with names and frequencies attached. When that section is one vague line, the work has quietly been assigned to you. A plan that answers all three clearly is worth more than a cheaper one that answers none of them.
